When the interview is in English: rehearse answers aloud with a real person
Direct answer: To get ready for a job interview in English, write short answers to the common questions, then rehearse them aloud in 15–30 minute 1:1 calls with a real person at your level who asks live follow-ups you can’t predict. Written notes and AI chats help prepare, but only a person reacts to what you actually said. The SpeakPal Club app lets you do this free, up to 30 minutes per call.

This is for users 16+ preparing for work interviews: first-job seekers (including freshers in India facing HR rounds), career switchers, and anyone applying for remote roles in English.
Why do follow-up questions need a real person?
You can memorise first answers. Interviewers judge you on the second and third questions: “Why did you choose that tool?”, “What would you do differently?”, “What did your manager think?”. Those depend on what you just said.
- Paper only: you know the words but have never said them under pressure.
- AI only: useful for drafting, but it doesn’t feel like a person listening, so the nerves never get practised.
- Paid tutor as your only reps: good feedback, but too few repetitions to make answers automatic.
A practice partner is not HR. Nobody is grading you, so mistakes are cheap — which is exactly why rehearsing with one lowers the fear on the real day.
How do I practise “Tell me about yourself”?
Use Present → Past → Future, 60–90 seconds:
“I’m a backend developer with two years of experience at a logistics company in Pune. (present) I’ve mostly built APIs in Django, and my main project cut order-processing time for our warehouse team. Before that I did a two-month internship at a small fintech. (past) I’m looking for a remote role where I can work on larger systems with an experienced team, which is why this position interested me. (future)”
Fresher version: swap the job for your degree and final-year project. Career switcher: lead with the new skill, then link your old field as an advantage.
- Write it, then cut it into keywords. Don’t memorise word for word.
- Say it aloud from keywords daily for a week; record the last try.
- Vary the order or a detail so it stays natural.
- Say it to a person who then asks: “Tell me more about that project.”
How do I use STAR answers?
STAR = Situation, Task, Action, Result. It stops wandering answers.
“Tell me about a time you worked under pressure.”
- Situation: “Two weeks before a release, a teammate left the project.”
- Task: “I had to take over the frontend as well as my backend work.”
- Action: “I listed what was essential, agreed a smaller scope with my lead, and set short daily goals.”
- Result: “We shipped on time. I learned to cut scope early instead of hoping.”
Keep S and T to two sentences; spend most time on Action and say “I”, not just “we”. Prepare 6–8 stories: project, conflict, failure, leadership, deadline, learning something fast.
How do I stop fillers and freezing?
- Swap “umm” for thinking phrases: “That’s a good question. Let me think for a second.” “One example that comes to mind is…”
- Pause instead of filling. Two seconds of silence sounds calm.
- Record and count fillers in a 2-minute answer; try to halve them.
- Rescue phrases: “Sorry, could you repeat the question?” “Just to make sure I understand, you’re asking about…”
- Accent: clarity matters more than sounding British or American. Slow down slightly, finish word endings, stress key words.

Partner drills
One question per call (10–15 min):
- Send your partner one question, e.g. “Tell me about a failure.”
- Answer in under two minutes.
- Partner asks three follow-ups, each based on what you said.
- One piece of feedback: clear / unclear / too long.
- Swap roles.
Full HR round (20–30 min):
- Partner asks: “Tell me about yourself”, “Why should we hire you?”, “Biggest weakness?”, “Where do you see yourself in five years?”, “Any questions for us?”
- After each answer, at least one “Why?” or “Can you give an example?”
- End with feedback on answer length, fillers, voice energy, and one strong moment.
A 4–6 week plan
| Weeks | Alone (15–20 min/day) | With a partner |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Tell me about yourself, strengths, weaknesses, “Why this company?” | 2 one-question calls/week |
| 3–4 | 6–8 STAR stories, 2 minutes each, aloud | 2–3 calls: partner picks any story and digs in |
| 5–6 | Record full answers, cut fillers, salary/notice-period answers | 2–3 full HR rounds with new partners |

FAQ
Is practising alone enough for an interview?
No. Solo practice is good for drafting and timing first answers, but you also need a person who asks unpredictable follow-ups.
How long should an interview practice call be?
15–30 minutes is enough: one question with three follow-ups takes about 10–15 minutes; a full HR round takes 20–30.
Is the SpeakPal Club app free for interview practice?
Yes. Free calls last up to 30 minutes each. Premium costs $9.99 per month or $29.99 per year (price may vary by region).
Should I memorise my interview answers?
Memorise structure and keywords, not full sentences. Memorised answers break when the interviewer interrupts.
What phrases buy time in an interview?
“That’s a good question; let me think for a moment.” “Could you clarify what you mean by…?” “One example that comes to mind is…”
